Originally from Canada, for a time in L.A., Beata now calls San Bernadino home. We have been working with Beata since the 'MySpace' days - so- for the long haul, know what I mean?

We always find her dresses to be stand-out peices that command attention. Her choice of color, minimal lines and assertive, yet feminine detail have earned her a following internationally.

These on the other hand are none of the above, well they are cozy. I personally prefer books to movies...both are valuable means of transport, to be sure. There's something about the written word. At it's best, reading a good book becomes a partnership...an undemanding, unstated partnership - quiet and deep - writer and reader, thought and thinker. The pace is managable. One can dwell on a passage for a decade, or romp manically devouring chapters in "realtime". The page is something you inhabit...once you go, you've been there. I guess movies are hard for me because there's not much room for my thoughts...if I start daydreaming, I'm left behind.

Books as functional art, takes things to a whole new level. Fort Dodge's Regina Smith of Esparto Studio transforms the printed word into unassuming jewelry, amplifying random words out of context...Hard bound jackets morph into clocks on the wall - symbolic and friendly - like postcards from some inner landscape...hello friend, remember when? Fashion Show No Accident

The Accidental Industry Fashion show last Friday was a well orchestrated major fashion event, and nothing less. Kudos to the Producers Lacy Brunnette, Lucy Shay and Sarah Jae, they pulled off one hell of a production. Most of us, after we regained our speech, could only mutter "when's the next show"?????

Accidental Industry Fashion Show

It's FINALLY here! The Accidental Industry Fashion Show will be THIS Friday and we can hardly wait. Lacy Brunnette, Lucy Shay and Sarah Jae Johnson have been dreaming, scheming and working nonstop to pull off what's looking to be a great event here in the East Village to kick off the holiday fashion season. The focus is party wear, and that's essential this time of year. Everyone knows, when you have the perfect dress lined up, the tinsel looks brighter, the cookies don't crumble and Santa's on his way.

Here's an exclusive: We asked Lacy/Lucy what was behind the name and here's the response. The Accidental Industry Fashion Show is inspired by underground fashion and the accidental discoveries that lead to high fashion innovation driven by the passion of the artists and its curators. Side note: I got into this business quite by accident, but that's just a coincidence, and a story for another time.

The show will feature collections from: Atomic Garage, Shu Shu Maus, Vitae Design Collective, Magpie, Raygun and Hill Vintage. Hair By Atelier and Eyecandy Artistry will be on make up.

There will be a silent auction to benefit Geez Louise! Young Women's Organization, and Van Holmgren (who also did the poster) has been setting the scene as only he can. Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 at Vitae and Raygun through Thursday evening. There will be a cash bar and after party at the venue. Must be 21+ to attend.

Maude Wren: Jewels for an Old Fashioned Girl

Maude Wren. Mod-ern. Modern Renaissance. There you go, the thought behind the name of Alicia Held-Morris's stunning jewelry line. It may just as well have been named for her granny Maude, as many of the components of these treasure-works are from generations ago.

In retrospect, we see the value and integrity of what was then costume jewelry...not usually taken very seriously, not very expensive, so there was lots and lots of it. Even at this level, by today's made in China in a hurry standards, these components are set apart as rarities and studies in fine design. Sprinkle on some patina and a mark or two of "experience", and you've got the stuff legends are made of.

Alicia assembles her pieces in much the same she would lay out a room, for she is a student of interior design...so you'll find your focal points, your nooks and fancies. A well designed piece is something to feel confident in. Something to come home to. The Maude Wren line can be found at Vitae Design collective.

Fall scarves....not winter yet!

With alittle help from the remnants department in my sewing room I put together these versions of the eternity scarf. Not the warmest thing in your closet. But a nice accent piece for those outfits that need somthing and maybe for those girls that have offices that are in the arctic temps still. One made from cotton lace, another from the remnants of some sweater material and the other a vintage cotton feed sac. They are thinner than average and very versitile.

And I am one who continues to be amazed at the creativity of others when it comes to upcycling vintage or whatever comes in the designers path. Fabrics and those who LOVE them

When it comes down to it, we have to - or get to - live with the choices we make, and a lot of what we do here at Vitae comes down to our our fabric stash and how we use it.

If you're out thrifting and you spot a character exhibiting odd behavior like holding an upside down t-shirt to their waist while obsessively guarding a cart overflowing with styles your Grandma wouldn't touch, you may be in the presence of a Reconstruct Artist.

A strange bird, their field of vision is expanded to see the possibilities of things. They are extremely tactile, and often do a finger scan of racks, hoping for a certain texture or weight relative to fabric content to jump up, their eyes doing the minimal scan for palate and pattern of print. Their sense of smell can be quite diminished - they are very forgiving of stinky.

Hemlines, necklines and ill placed pockets are but challenges to be overcome, mere symptoms of the pre-rescue condition. . If a garment is damaged, out of time or just needs a lift, an adept re-designer (not unlike a physician or counselor), makes an assessment, some mental recommendations, and the path to recovery is set.
Following that train of thought, if harvesting awesome buttons is the only humane thing to do, well...that's the cycle of fashion.

We are happy to be offering a small selection of Alternative Apparel at Vitae. You've already seen and felt the soft fabrics and great fit of these clothes being used for Acanthus Apparel's designs, but now we are carrying a rack of basics from Alternative Apparel.

This short sleeve tee is probably the most comfortable item of clothing ever. Seriously. It's 90% Modal Silk Jersey and 10% Silk so it's super soft. The slouchy pocket is a great detail too. Meet the Intern

Hi! My name is Mackenzie and I'll be interning at Vitae in June and July. I'll be busy snapping lots of pictures of the store, blogging, updating the facebook page, as well as designing some clothes too! I just graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls with a degree in Textiles and Apparel. At UNI I was a director of our annual fashion show and also designed a collection for the show. Here are few of my favorite pieces from my collection!

When I'm not busy making clothes or interning I'm out thrifting and hunting down good vintage, eating yummy food, or exploring Des Moines! If you have any suggestions of local places in Des Moines I should check out, leave a comment and let me know. :)
After my internship I hope to start my own collection. I'm really excited to be here at Vitae learning from Des Moines' best! So far Julie, Melissa, and Alyssa have been so nice and welcoming and I'm ready to get to work! Stop in sometime and say hi!

Julia Lovan Designs

Julia LoVan is an American fashion designer, fine artist, and urban community developer. She worked in the fashion industry as well as in gang prevention/youth development in the Rampart district in Los Angeles, CA . In 2009 she was one of 6 designers chosen to show 15 pieces in the Project Ethos fashion show in Hollywood from which she subsequently made the headlines and front cover of California Apparel News, which serves the largest apparel center in the country. She was also on the founding core team of the Mosaic fashion show fundraiser Hope in the City in 2008, becoming sponsorship director and designers coordinator in 2010, steering the annual show to become an official part Los Angeles Fashion Week. She has worked with many top photographers, models, designers, and companies such as Mike Colon, Jeannie Mai, Catwalk Pros, Lemon Lime Agency, Johan Khalilian, Core Clothing, Chan Luu, Dear Abigail, Fuze Beverage, International Silks and Woolens, Shekhar Rahate, David Kang Casting, def.i.ni.cion, paqit, Raven and Lily, Falling Whisltes, To Write Love on Her Arms, Awaken, and The Border feature film.

Born to Laotian immigrants, LoVan grew up in northwest Iowa with two siblings. She studied fine art at Northwestern College, completing a design internship at Zandra Rhodes and the Fashion and Textile Museum in London, England. From junior high through college she enjoyed competing in many sports and painting portraits, and after college did a year-long program in Atlanta with Mission Year which drove her passion to combine creativity with social justice after living in and serving in under-resourced areas. LoVan currently lives in Des Moines, Iowa where she works at Serve Our Youth providing mentoring for adjudicated youth, and creates wedding dresses and women's contemporary apparel for sale in the midwest, California, and online and is working towards opening her own boutique. She is a part of the Los Angeles cohort of the DeVos Urban Leadership Initiative which increases the capacity of urban youth leaders. I am not a "foodie" , a musician, a film maker or an event planner...but thank God for the folks that are passionate about these things so I can eat, listen to and be generally enriched by them. I like to make clothing out of vintage materials and to stumble upon vintage finds and bring them to the light. As a designer, the quality and rarity of vintage materials is as close as I'll come for some time, to the most expensive exclusive choices available to those at the top. As a buyer, I really really enjoy investing in my instincts and waiting for the bloom...the guy or gal that's brave enough to blaze a fashion trail and pick up on the lead. I suppose these trends are in the magazines, eventually they are...and ultimately the mall. But with vintage, you rock because you can have the best - first. It's a niche...my thing...and I'm more than happy to do my part.

Lilly is a little one that we can help a lot just by eating hot wings and sporting a cool T shirt. Things we do every day, right? At least on a good day when the laundry's done and we have a couple of bucks for a blast of goodness with a side of ranch. We fight for Lilly is a small scale local campaign to benefit a family in need. Josh "Jay-O" Ansah of Jay Tees Apparel has put this together because he's a good guy - an entrepreneur and a fighter who likes the concept of BECAUSE. BE...with a CAUSE. Do what you do, but don't forget that actions have purpose, and intentions are powerful. His "I RUN" t-shirt line has been wildly successful here at Vitae. It appeals to track stars and marathoners of course, but the appeal is wider than that - we all run - we run errands, run after children, run businesses, run in circles. So do what you do & try to make it matter. The "I Fight" line has a similar appeal, and for a short time Vitae is carrying special edition"I Fight For Lilly" t-shirts. The guys at 8/7 Central came on board with their screen printing skills, and we are happy to allow all proceeds to go directly to the cause of Lilly. Be Cause.

All day on March 16th, 10% of sales at Buffalo Wild Wings (Merle Hay Location) will go to the fund for Lilly as well. So be a champ and look sharp while indulging in some good food. Do it for the kid & make it count;)

Well, just coming off a very nice holiday season, let's begin by saying we're thankful. Many made a point of shopping local & were pleased at the selection and caliber of the mostly Iowa made items we carry. We are thankful for our "makers", the real elves in their spare-room workshops doing what they love and consistently providing us with stock we are proud to represent.

Looking ahead, we'll do our best to promote our consignors and to be on the look out for the best our area has to offer and to measure up to those standards ourselves as we create our own lines.

We have been at the "new" location in the East Village of Des Moines since March 2010, and we have found that the foot traffic and community support are pretty phenomenal. The goal for this year is to be prepared and anticipating success as the many events in the area provide the crowd - sometimes all we have to do is open the door and be the best we can be.

We believe in our community - and your community for that matter. Live in it, shop in it and the reward is self evident. You are home and we love you.

I do love me a tapestry bag. Tells a story. Has a history of it's own, that is, when made of vintage textiles. I used to make them...probably will soon & I must say that I'm inspired. They don't make ships like they used to (and that's okay). Sure, there must be artisans making replicas, and that's thrilling in a way, but it's not the same. We're talking about time here. I know, you thought we were talking about a bag.

Tapestries weave a tale. This one is an old linen tea towel. May have been a nice gift - thankfully apparently not used to wipe a lot of dishes. No wear, no fade - a good specimen. Probably from the 1960's and most likely good Irish linen, as gifty towels tended to be. But to me, it's an iconic image of an iconic image - and from this thrice removed perspective, it's quite refreshing. We're so jaded. So busy. To contemplate the journey is the gift here (we're talking about time again). To travel by ship - the danger, the adventure and commitment involved - I can only imagine...for a moment...while I look at this bag. Even the era of the textile itself. Wow, an actual depiction. We not only get the full sail ship, but a sunset. At the moment, you're far more likely to get stylized almost symbol like images. I enjoy the almost cartoony nostalgia we're experiencing in textile design now, but it's good to mix in some authentic stuff, or we are at risk of stylizing our very history. So pause, take the journey - appreciate the sunset and the fact that a real person in America no less, put it on a bag for you. There's only one & it's not even expensive. Dress for the Weather - or not

Iowa, I'm convinced, is Native American for "land of confusing weather"...that's okay, today it's a very good thing. We're actually 2 weeks into an amazing "not sucky" weather trend - just when we were all practically contemplating a mass exit. It's kind of an abusive relationship we have going here with Mother Nature - whom we'll call "Rick" for the sake of the metaphor...here we go, it's playing all nice with sunshine kisses and on the weekend even & how did I ever doubt you weather...and the recent blustery brutality is barely behind us & you know another nasty binge of drizzle & gray is in our future....oh, we know, and yet we stay.

There's an event outside our shop today. It's Huge. We're talking thousands of people. It's World Food Prize big - the World Food Festival is an annual celebration of - food . I'm in. Last year it snowed for heaven's sake & right now we're pushing 80 degrees. Great. Iowa, you know I love you,
you twisted freak.

So anyway, today we adapted by throwing on the air conditioning, grabbing all sweaters & coats from the window and put the main mannequin in a one sleeve tropical print frock - symbolic of the confusion of this seasonal mayhem. One sleeve = ready for anything, you'll at least be half comfortable :) I'm actually pretending our little boutique is in a cute little shopping niche in Lahaina or anywhere in Maui...out come the shell necklaces and sunglasses & we're ready for the sunbirds. Everything's beautiful. Sorry, due to technical difficulties I am unable to post my awesome pictures...I'll send you a postcard.

Events get you out there!

No, we can't participate in everything...not possible. Sometimes it seems we have 3 invites plus a wedding every time the weekend rolls around. Then comes along a feel-good event that invigorates and inspires you...like a stroll through the village on a sunny afternoon in the company of family and friends...and the vibe is good. Creativity and optimism abound and you realize - not for the first time , that to make a difference sometimes all you have to do is be there. Artisans and entrepreneurs are working hard at things they love and hope you will too.

The East Village Sunday Market Bazaar is an event that celebrates our community at it's core. It's people that make stuff and provide things lovingly and personally as an alternative shopping experience. Soon enough, winter will come & outdoor Fall afternoon events will be but a memory...let's make it a good one...lets make a lot of them while we can! The Bazaar runs every Sunday from 12 to 4pm through Oct. 31st. on E. 5th in the East Village. Many shops are also open, and vendors alternate and vary from week to week. Here at Vitae, we're taking the opportunity to clean out our craft cupboards and closets of accumulated Vintage and kitsch & will be sharing these wares up front on jumble tables on Bazaar Sundays for a special treat!

"Female Trouble" Artist Reception

We should all learn to be self-reliant –anyway, it’s better for everyone. Realistically, though we can’t all instantly become pioneers and we don’t have to. Rather, pursue a D.I.Y. craft or service, and you’ll be in a position to barter for what you want and need if the need should arise. So, if we’re going to surf the axis shift, see the dollar become just another layer of history or who knows (insert scenario here), just find yourself a good shovel and dig in…there’s some satisfying work to do.
